Louise Haigh MP welcomes new powers to tackle pavement parking
Louise Haigh, MP for Sheffield Heeley, has today welcomed the inclusion in the Government’s landmark English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill of new measures that will give local authorities stronger powers to crack down on unsafe and inconsiderate pavement parking.
The Bill represents the biggest transfer of power out of Westminster in a century, handing new decision-making authority to communities and local leaders. Among the measures announced are provisions that will enable the Government to introduce enforcement powers on pavement parking via secondary legislation, giving local transport authorities the tools they need to act.
Welcoming the announcement, Louise Haigh MP said:
“Over the years many people including older residents, disabled people and parents with prams have spoken to me about the issues they’ve faced with inconsiderate parking on pavements. For too long, communities like ours have lacked the powers to deal with this effectively.
“These new measures are really important. By giving local authorities the ability to fine inconsiderate parkers, we can make our streets safer, more accessible, and more welcoming for everyone.
“As Transport Secretary, I pushed for powers like these to be granted to councils and I am delighted this Labour Government is taking action to combat this risky practice as part of a package of reforms that devolve power away from Westminster and into the hands of local communities.”
